This compilation of Vanagon transmission specs was assembled by Mr. Helmut Zeidler.  I was unable to reach Mr. Zeidler to ask his permission to duplicate his information.  But, since he posted it on his website for public display (with a GNU copyright), it is a safe assumption that he does not mind if we duplicate it here.  If you are Mr. Zeidler and you object to the use of your compilation of specs, please do not hesitate to contact us.

This are tables of gearboxes available for Vanagons, as far as I heard about. There are eight main sections: Gearboxes for the aircooled boxers, four speeds for the waterboxers, four speeds for the Diesels, five speeds for waterboxers, five speeds for the Diesel, gearboxes from South Africa, and some automatics.
First the early 4-speed boxes for the aircooled gasoline engines:

The boxes with ID character DN, DP and DO includes the differential lock option. The DJ and DO does have special gear ratings for mountains, but at present I do not have the specifications.

Remember, the 2.0L is for the aircooled boxer, 1.9L and 2.1 are watercooled boxer engines, 1.6L and 1.7L Diesel engines are watercooled inline type.
